What Does an Ethical Hacker Do?

Have you heard about what an ethical hacker does? What are their responsibilities? Don’t worry; today we will explore the different roles and responsibilities of ethical hackers and their contributions to businesses.

As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of information security analysts, which includes ethical hackers, is projected to grow 31% between 2019 and 2029, significantly higher than the average for all occupations. In Cambodia, the demand for cybersecurity professionals is also on the rise. The rapid digital transformation and increasing cyber threats in Cambodia underscore the critical need for skilled ethical hackers to protect businesses and organizations.

What is an Ethical Hacker?

An ethical hacker is a cybersecurity expert with in-depth knowledge of computer systems, networks, and security. They are well-versed in potential threats and vulnerabilities that can compromise business systems. They are involved in the authorized attempt to gain access to computer systems, applications, or data by duplicating the methods and strategies that a malicious hacker would use.

Role of an Ethical Hacker

The role of an ethical hacker is to support businesses in enhancing their cybersecurity by identifying vulnerabilities in their systems before malicious hackers can exploit them. They use techniques to test a business's defenses with permission and for beneficial purposes.

Importance of an Ethical Hacker

Top ethical hackers play a critical role in safeguarding digital assets and protecting against cyber threats. By proactively identifying vulnerabilities and security weaknesses in systems, networks, and applications, they help organizations mitigate the risk of data breaches, financial losses, and reputational damage.

Ethical hackers simulate real-world cyber-attacks through penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and security audits, providing valuable insights into security flaws and gaps in defenses. They also contribute to incident response and digital forensics efforts, assisting in investigating and mitigating security incidents.

Key Responsibilities of an Ethical Hacker

  1. Identifying and Addressing Vulnerabilities: Ethical hackers proactively identify and address vulnerabilities in systems, networks, and software programs to enhance cybersecurity defenses and prevent cyberattacks.
  2. Simulating Cyberattacks: They simulate real-world cyberattacks to anticipate and prevent potential security breaches.
  3. Conducting Security Assessments: Ethical hackers conduct security assessments and penetration testing to safeguard sensitive information and strengthen overall security posture.
  4. Documenting Findings: They document all findings and potential threats, ensuring proper reporting of bugs and vulnerabilities.
  5. Confidentiality: Ethical hackers keep all their findings secure and sign non-disclosure agreements to protect business information.
  6. Inspecting Patch Installations: They inspect patch installations to prevent exploitation and evaluate the security process.

Technical Skills and Knowledge Required

  1. Network Skills: Understanding networking protocols, the TCP/IP stack, subnetting, routing, and network topologies.
  2. Operating Systems Proficiency: Proficiency in Windows, Linux, macOS, and command-line tools and scripting languages.
  3. Web Technologies: Knowledge of web application architecture, common vulnerabilities, and web development frameworks.
  4. Programming and Scripting: Proficiency in languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, HTML, PHP, C#, and .NET.
  5. DBMS Skills: Understanding database management systems like SQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
  6. Penetration Testing Skills: Conducting penetration tests to evaluate system security.
  7. SQL Skills: Proficiency in SQL for hacking endeavors and interacting with databases.
  8. Cryptography: Knowledge of techniques for secure communication.
  9. Reverse Engineering: Understanding reverse engineering to identify potential security flaws.

How to Become a Software Developer in Cambodia (No Experience Needed)

A practical guide to become a software developer in Cambodia with no experience: what to learn first, what juniors actually earn, and how long it really takes.

You do not need a computer science degree or a genius-level brain to become a software developer in Cambodia. You need a plan, a few hours a week you can protect, and enough patience to keep going after your code breaks for the fifth time in one evening. Phnom Penh's tech sector is still young. Banks, telecoms, startups and agencies are hiring people who can build software, and many are hiring juniors because the senior talent pool is small. That is an opening. Here is an honest roadmap.   Step 1: Pick One Language and Stay With It The most common beginner mistake is switching languages every three weeks. Pick one and go deep for at least six months. Python is the friendliest starting point. The syntax reads almost like English; it is used everywhere in AI and data work, and you can build something useful within a few weeks. JavaScript is the alternative if you want to see results in a browser immediately. Whichever you choose, learn the same fundamentals: variab

Searching for IT courses in Phnom Penh can feel overwhelming. Every school promises a bright future in tech, but programs differ enormously in depth, recognition, and what you can actually do when you finish. Here is a quick guide to choosing well, plus a look at the four professional diploma programs opening at IT Academy STEP Cambodia for 2026/2027, with the first classes starting this November.   4 Things to Check Before You Enroll Accreditation. A certificate is only as valuable as the institution behind it. Look for MoEYS accreditation and diplomas you can officially verify. Portfolio, not just exams. Employers care more about what you can build than what you scored. The best programs end every term with a real project: a website, an app, a brand book, a dashboard. Starts from zero. A well-designed program requires no IT background. Finishing high school and basic English should be enough. Real tools, flexible schedule. You should learn industry-standard softwa

You just finished high school. Now what? IT Academy STEP Cambodia is now accepting applications for the Academic Year 2026–2027. In the first term, all students go through English for IT and digital skills foundation courses. These are built into the program so that no student is left behind, whatever their starting point.   What Is a Professional Diploma, and Why Does It Matter? Many students finishing high school face the same choice: a 4-year university degree that costs more and often does not lead to a job in the field, or vocational training that leads to low-paying work. Neither option tells you clearly what the job market actually wants. A Professional Diploma from IT Academy STEP Institute is a different path. It is not a local certificate. It is issued by IT Step Institute,

Inside Our Free 3D Design Workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia

Recap of our free AI Tools for 3D Design workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia. See what 67 students learned about AI, Blender, and the real 3D design pipeline.

On July 4, our STEP Olympic Branch was packed. 67 students showed up for our free workshop, AI Tools for 3D Animation and Product Design. By the end, one thing was clear: everyone wanted to know how AI is changing the way 3D artists work. If you missed it, here is what went down.   A Session That Actually Kept You Awake The workshop was led by Mr. Aleksei Brunov, and he kept it fun. Instead of reading off slides, he built things live. Students watched every step happen in real time, including the mistakes and the fixes. But the best part was not the tech. It was learning where AI helps, where it fails, and why you still need real skill to get a good result.   AI Can Start the Job. It Cannot Finish It. Here is the lesson that surprised most students. AI is amazing at the first step. You type one sentence and a rough 3D model shows up in minutes. Work that used to take days now takes seconds. But open that model and the problem shows up fast. The shape is mes
