How to Become a Software Developer in Cambodia (No Experience Needed)

You do not need a computer science degree or a genius-level brain to become a software developer in Cambodia. You need a plan, a few hours a week you can protect, and enough patience to keep going after your code breaks for the fifth time in one evening.

Phnom Penh's tech sector is still young. Banks, telecoms, startups and agencies are hiring people who can build software, and many are hiring juniors because the senior talent pool is small. That is an opening. Here is an honest roadmap.

Step 1: Pick One Language and Stay With It

The most common beginner mistake is switching languages every three weeks. Pick one and go deep for at least six months.

Python is the friendliest starting point. The syntax reads almost like English; it is used everywhere in AI and data work, and you can build something useful within a few weeks. JavaScript is the alternative if you want to see results in a browser immediately.

Whichever you choose, learn the same fundamentals: variables, loops, conditions, functions, and how to structure data. Every language after your first one gets dramatically easier.

Step 2: Build Things, Not Just Tutorials

Watching a tutorial feels like learning. It is not. The knowledge only sticks when you close the video and build something on your own, badly, from scratch.

Start small and finish what you start. A calculator. A to-do list that saves your tasks. A simple website for a friend's business. Five finished small projects will teach you more, and impress an employer more, than fifty half-watched courses.

Step 3: Learn the Skills Around the Code

Employers rarely hire on code alone. They look for people who can also use Git and GitHub to manage versions, work with a database using SQL, read technical documentation in English, and explain their thinking to a non-technical colleague.

That last one matters more than most beginners expect. The developers who get promoted are the ones who can communicate.

What Software Developers Actually Earn in Cambodia

Be realistic about the first year and ambitious about the fifth.

Public salary data for Phnom Penh in 2026 puts junior developer salaries roughly in the range of $400 to $1,000 per month, with most entry-level roles clustering around $650 to $850. Experienced developers, and those who specialise in areas like cloud, mobile or AI, commonly move past $1,500.

Treat these as estimates rather than promises. Your first role may be an internship or a junior position at the lower end of that range, and that is normal. What changes your income fastest is not years served; it is demonstrable skill and a portfolio someone can look at.

Self-Taught or Structured Program?

Both work. They fail for different reasons.

Self-teaching is free and flexible, but most people who start quit within a few months. There is no deadline, no feedback when your code is bad but working, and no one to tell you what to learn next.

A structured program costs money and time, but it solves exactly those three problems. It gives you a sequence, a person to ask, and a deadline that is not optional. If you already know you struggle to finish things alone, be honest about it and choose accordingly.

The Structured Path at IT Academy STEP Institute

The Software Development professional diploma at IT Academy STEP Cambodia is built for people starting at zero. It runs 2.5 years across five terms, beginning with programming foundations and IT English, then moving through Python, C#, and databases, web development, cloud and mobile, and finishing with Android development and AI applications.

Every term ends with a real project, so you graduate with a portfolio rather than only a transcript. The program leads to an International Professional Diploma recognised in 20+ countries, with a MoEYS Associate Degree option and a pathway to a Bachelor's at a partnered Cambodian university. STEP graduates now work at over 1,500 companies.

Entry requirements are modest: basic English and no coding background at all. Classes run in morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend groups, so you can study around school or work.

Start This Week

Whichever path you choose, the first step is the same. Open a free Python tutorial tonight and write your first ten lines of code. Then keep going tomorrow.

If you want the structured route, book a free consultation, and we will map out what your first year would look like. Call 085 777 120 or message us on Telegram.

Digital Business and AI: Inside STEP's Newest Professional Diploma Program

Inside the STEP Digital Business and AI course Cambodia has been waiting for: what you study each term, the careers it leads to, and who the program is built for.

Every company in Phnom Penh is being told to "use AI." Very few have people who actually know how. That gap is exactly what the Digital Business and Artificial Intelligence diploma at IT Academy STEP Institute was built to close. It is the newest of our four professional diploma programs, and the only digital business and AI course Cambodia offers where artificial intelligence is not one module at the end. It runs through all five terms, applied to real business work.   Who This Program Is Actually For This is not a programming degree. If you want to build software, the Software Development diploma is your path. DBAI is for the person who wants to sit between business and technology. You enjoy solving problems, working with people, and making decisions with evidence rather than guesses. You want to understand data, marketing, operations and AI well enough to lead a project, not just complete a task.   What You Study, Term by Term The program runs 2.5 years acr

Searching for IT courses in Phnom Penh can feel overwhelming. Every school promises a bright future in tech, but programs differ enormously in depth, recognition, and what you can actually do when you finish. Here is a quick guide to choosing well, plus a look at the four professional diploma programs opening at IT Academy STEP Cambodia for 2026/2027, with the first classes starting this November.   4 Things to Check Before You Enroll Accreditation. A certificate is only as valuable as the institution behind it. Look for MoEYS accreditation and diplomas you can officially verify. Portfolio, not just exams. Employers care more about what you can build than what you scored. The best programs end every term with a real project: a website, an app, a brand book, a dashboard. Starts from zero. A well-designed program requires no IT background. Finishing high school and basic English should be enough. Real tools, flexible schedule. You should learn industry-standard softwa

These are built into the program so that no student is left behind, whatever their starting point.   What Is a Professional Diploma, and Why Does It Matter? Many students finishing high school face the same choice: a 4-year university degree that costs more and often does not lead to a job in the field, or vocational training that leads to low-paying work. Neither option tells you clearly what the job market actually wants. A Professional Diploma from IT Academy STEP Institute is a different path. It is not a local certificate. It is issued by IT Step Institute,

Inside Our Free 3D Design Workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia

Recap of our free AI Tools for 3D Design workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia. See what 67 students learned about AI, Blender, and the real 3D design pipeline.

On July 4, our STEP Olympic Branch was packed. 67 students showed up for our free workshop, AI Tools for 3D Animation and Product Design. By the end, one thing was clear: everyone wanted to know how AI is changing the way 3D artists work. If you missed it, here is what went down.   A Session That Actually Kept You Awake The workshop was led by Mr. Aleksei Brunov, and he kept it fun. Instead of reading off slides, he built things live. Students watched every step happen in real time, including the mistakes and the fixes. But the best part was not the tech. It was learning where AI helps, where it fails, and why you still need real skill to get a good result.   AI Can Start the Job. It Cannot Finish It. Here is the lesson that surprised most students. AI is amazing at the first step. You type one sentence and a rough 3D model shows up in minutes. Work that used to take days now takes seconds. But open that model and the problem shows up fast. The shape is mes
