On May 11th, IT Academy STEP Cambodia hosted a fascinating workshop led by AI expert Sam Seng. Seng, who works in research, development, and engineering from New York City, introduced participants to the exciting world of artificial intelligence (AI). This workshop specifically focused on how to use AI to recognize images, with a fun and practical project: building your own drink classifier!

Coffee vs. Boba Tea: Unveiling the Power of AI

Forget picking sides – this workshop was about using AI to tell your coffee from your boba tea in a photo! Participants learned the basics of AI and image recognition, and then put those skills to work by creating a program that can automatically identify these two popular drinks.

Learning by Doing: A Hands-on Introduction to AI

The workshop used a "learn by doing" approach, guiding students step-by-step through the creation of their drink classifier. Here's what they covered:

  • Understanding AI and Image Recognition: The session started with a clear introduction to AI and image recognition, ensuring everyone had a solid foundation before diving into the project.

  • Setting Up Your AI Toolkit: Participants learned how to set up their coding environment using Jupyter Notebooks and essential libraries. This is like building a workbench with all the tools you need for your AI project.

  • Data: The Fuel for AI: The workshop used existing sets of coffee and boba tea images, providing the "data" that the AI model needs to learn.

  • Training the AI to Recognize Drinks: Students learned how to fine-tune pre-trained AI models, specifically teaching them to distinguish between coffee and boba tea in photographs. Think of it like training a dog to recognize toys!

  • Testing Your AI Creation: After building their models, participants tested them on new images to see how well they could identify drinks.

  • Seeing Inside the AI Machine: The workshop went beyond just building the model. Students also learned how to visualize how the AI actually works to differentiate between coffee and boba tea images.

  • Q&A and Exploring the Future: The session concluded with a question and answer segment where participants could discuss potential applications of their new skills and explore resources for further learning in AI.

More Than Just Coffee vs. Boba Tea

This workshop wasn't just about creating a fun drink classifier. It aimed to spark curiosity and open doors to the exciting world of AI. By giving students the tools and knowledge to build their own AI creation, the workshop empowered them to explore the vast possibilities of this rapidly growing field.

After High School in Cambodia: 4 Tech Careers You Can Start in 2.5 Years

IT Academy STEP Cambodia is now open for admissions 2026–2027. Discover 4 Professional Diploma programs: Software Development, Computer Graphics & Design, Digital Marketing, and Digital Business & AI. No prior tech experience needed.

You just finished high school. Now what? IT Academy STEP Cambodia is now accepting applications for the Academic Year 2026–2027. We offer four Professional Diploma programs, each 2.5 years long, each designed around what employers in Cambodia and beyond are hiring for right now. No prior tech experience required. In the first term, all students go through English for IT and digital skills foundation courses. These are built into the program so that no student is left behind, whatever their starting point.   What Is a Professional Diploma, and Why Does It Matter? Many students finishing high school face the same choice: a 4-year university degree that costs more and often does not lead to a job in the field, or vocational training that leads to low-paying work. Neither option tells you clearly what the job market actually wants. A Professional Diploma from IT Academy STEP Institute is a different path. It is not a local certificate. It is issued by IT Step Institute,

Inside Our Free 3D Design Workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia

Recap of our free AI Tools for 3D Design workshop at IT Academy STEP Cambodia. See what 67 students learned about AI, Blender, and the real 3D design pipeline.

On July 4, our STEP Olympic Branch was packed. 67 students showed up for our free workshop, AI Tools for 3D Animation and Product Design. By the end, one thing was clear: everyone wanted to know how AI is changing the way 3D artists work. If you missed it, here is what went down.   A Session That Actually Kept You Awake The workshop was led by Mr. Aleksei Brunov, and he kept it fun. Instead of reading off slides, he built things live. Students watched every step happen in real time, including the mistakes and the fixes. But the best part was not the tech. It was learning where AI helps, where it fails, and why you still need real skill to get a good result.   AI Can Start the Job. It Cannot Finish It. Here is the lesson that surprised most students. AI is amazing at the first step. You type one sentence and a rough 3D model shows up in minutes. Work that used to take days now takes seconds. But open that model and the problem shows up fast. The shape is mes

STEP Cambodia Graduation 2026: A New Generation of Tech Talent Rises

On June 28, 2026, IT Academy STEP Cambodia celebrated its Computer Graphics & Design and Software Development graduates, with developers earning an average starting salary of $ 725.

On June 28, 2026, IT Academy STEP Cambodia marked another proud milestone as two groups of students crossed the stage and stepped into the future they worked so hard to build. Graduates from the Computer Graphics & Design and Software Development programs celebrated the end of one journey and the beginning of a far bigger one: a career in the industries shaping Cambodia's digital future. Two Programs, One Shared Determination The graduating class represented two distinct but equally vital sides of the technology world. The Computer Graphics & Design graduates spent their journey mastering the visual language of the digital age, learning to turn ideas into compelling designs, brand identities, and creative work that businesses depend on every day. The Software Development graduates, meanwhile, learned to build the systems, applications, and solutions that power modern life. Behind every line of code was a student who refused to give up, who debugged late into the night, a

How to Start a UX/UI Design Career in Cambodia (No Tech Degree Needed)

Want to break into UX/UI design in Cambodia without a tech degree? Here is a clear, beginner-friendly roadmap to start your design career in 2026.

If you have ever opened an app and thought, "Why is this so confusing?" or "This just feels nice to use," you have already been thinking like a UX/UI designer. The good news for young Cambodians: turning that instinct into a real, well-paid career does not require a computer science degree, a coding background, or years of study. UX/UI design is one of the fastest-growing creative careers in the world, and Cambodia's digital economy is catching up quickly. Local startups, banks, e-commerce platforms, and delivery apps all need designers who can make their products easy and enjoyable to use. The demand is real, and the barrier to entry is lower than most people think. Here is how to actually start.   First, understand what UX/UI design really is UX (user experience) is about how something works and feels to use. UI (user interface) is about how it looks: the colors, buttons, spacing, and typography. A good designer combines both so that an app or website is not only be
